The Task:

Service and maintenance of a 1.5 ton per hour of steam Schmid boiler to heat Adelphi Distillery – eco friendly whisky – Biomass Boiler Services Ltd.

The Client

Adelphi Distillery are an innovative and environmentally friendly whisky producer based in the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula, Scotland. One of our more remote customers, we take pride in providing continuous support and quarterly maintenance for their Schmid biomass boiler.

Installation, Operation and Wood Fuel Consumption

The 1.2MW biomass boiler we installed is fuelled with wood chip from a forest only a mile and a half away. In addition to biomass, the distillery also uses a hydro generator on a nearby river.

Renewable Energy and Innovating in the Whisky Industry

Approximately 88 per cent of Scottish distilleries are using fossil fuels, but the Scottish industry is aiming to bring this down to 20 per cent by 2020. Ardnamurchan is leading the way – using biomass and fuelling with locally sourced woodchip keeps their C02 emissions down, maintains their eco friendly image, and helps them to stand out on the shelf in a crowded market.

“The whisky industry has been going for so long that it’s quite difficult to innovate. Having said that, because of our remote location, we’ve been able to look at the way we heat and power the plant,”

-managing director of Adelphi distillery, Alex Bruce

Ian, Conor, Keith and George continue to provide maintenance and service this boiler quarterly, whilst providing continued support. Ardnamurchan is just one of our many clients based across the UK and Ireland. We have a broad team of experienced engineers, with over 30 years of experience.
